Recap - Panthers at Columbus from Tuesday and Panthers gameday vs Ottawa 7:30 pm 3/31 in Sunrise

COLUMBUS, OH - The Florida Panthers fell to the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2 in a shootout on Tuesday night. It was the second night in a row the Panthers fell in the shootout.

Scotty Upshall, recently acquired from Phoenix, started the scoring at the 7:06 mark of the 1st. His hart snap shot ringed off the post or crossbar over Scott Clemmensen and in. It was his 21st of the season.

In the second Sergei Samsonov took a shot that went off the post and then off goaltender Steve Mason. It made it right to David Booth who tipped it into a wide open net to tie it at 1 3:41 in. It was Booth's 22nd.

Nearly 19 minutes in, Antoine Vermette scored his 18th goal in much the same way Booth scored his. The save was made by Clemmensen and Vermette was on the doorstep to put it home to put the Blue Jackets up a goal.

The Panthers came back, though. Evgeny Dadanov scored his 8th 7:31 in. He got the feed from Jason Garrison and went in...when he saw he had no shot on Mason, he hustled around for a complete wrap around goal. It was a beauty that sent us into overtime and a shootout.

The shootout stats: Panthers 0-3, Blue Jackets 1-3. Final score: 3-2 Blue Jackets.

Three Stars:

  1. Steve Mason (W)
  2. Maksim Mayorov (Shotout Goal)
  3. Scott Clemmensen (L)

PANTHERS GAME DAY

Florida Panthers (29-36-12 70 points)
vs
Ottawa Senators (29-38-10 68 points)
Thursday, March 31, 2011 7:30 PM BankAtlantic Center, Sunrise, FL
TV: FS-Florida (Steve Goldstein,Bill Lindsay), SNET-East (Ottawa) (Dean Brown, Denis Potvin)
RADIO: 560 WQAM (Miami) (Randy Moller), Team 1200 (Ottawa) (Dean Brown, Gord Wilson, Dave Schreiber)

* * *
BATTLE FOR LAST: Ottawa has won all 3 matchups this year, and Panthers fans won't be upset if they take 1 more. The Sens are 2 points behind the Panthers for worst in the East. With a loss, the Panthers would sit in the 3rd worst spot in the East, holding a tiebreaker with Ottawa and the Islanders. The two teams will be playing hard, though. Pride and potentially jobs next year are on the line for both squads.
RETOOLING: Floirda and Ottawa share a common goal: Retooling. Both teams are building for the future. Ottawa traded away Chris Campoli to Chicago on the trade deadline day and Mike Fisher left to join his country music star wife, Carrie Underwood, in Nashville a few weeks prior. Ottawa also took part in a "goalie swap", flipping Brian Elliott to Colorado in exchange for former Panther Craig Anderson. Elliott has had little success since joining Colorado, posting an 0-3 record. Anderson, however, is 5-3 since stepping in as the Senator's starter.
HEY, NOW...YOU'RE AN ALL STAR: Looking forward to next season, Ottawa will be hosting the NHL All Star Game in 2012. It will mark only the third time since 2000 that a Canadian team will host the mid-winter classic. This also marks the second time the All Star Game will be in a nations Capital. In 1982, the Washington Capitals hosted the game, with the Wales Conference beating the Campbell Conference 4-2 at the Capital Centre. It is fitting that the team will host next year, as it will be the 20th season of the current version of the Senators.

PRODBABLE GOALIES:
FLA - Scott Clemmensen

The Florida Panthers conclude a 5 game road trip today in Columbus when they take on the Blue Jackets. They previously faced the central division opponent in January, losing 3-2 in OT on the 19th. Fedor Tyutin, RJ Umburger, and Andrew Vermette scored the three goals, while David Booth and Corey Stillman scored against Columbus. (Chris Higgins has 2 goals against the Blue Jackets, but both were scored as a member of the Vancouver Canucks). Columbus will most likely not make the playoffs, but they are still playing for a .500 record and are not a team to face lightly. Scott Clemmensen will take the place of the day-to-day Tomas Vokoun in the Panther net.

Quick recap, Panthers fall to Pens in SO

March 27, 2011

PITTSBURGH - The Florida Panthers fell to the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 in a shootout Sunday afternoon at the Consol Energy Center. For the Penguins it was an NHL record 4th straight shootout win. With both teams out of firepower (Sidney Crosby and Evgeny Malkin are hurt and the Panthers have...yeah), both teams got goals from unlikely sources.

All of the regulation scoring came in the 2nd. Alexander Sulzer had the puck for the Panthers at the point at 15:32. Ryan Carter tipped in in for his 3rd of the year to put the Cats on top. Darcy Hordichuk also assisted on the goal.

2 minutes later, at 17:49, Ben Lovejoy scored the equalizer for the Penguins. It was HIS third of the season with Alexi Kovalev and James Neal helping on the goal.

That was the score through two, three, and overtime (four). After regulation, Florida goalie Tomas Vokoun pulled himself after suffering a back problem in the third. Scott Clemmensen came in cold and played well in OT, stopping all four shots against him. In the shootout, both teams failed to get a tally the first time around. but Kovalev and Neal both scored in the 2nd and 3rd shootout frame, respectively...and after a Niclad Bergfors miss, the Penguins took the game in OT. Florida heads to Columbus tomorrow to take on the Blue Jackets.

THREE STARS:

  1. Marc-Andre Fleury (W 37 SV)
  2. Alex Kovalev (GW SOG 1 A)
  3. Ben Lovejoy (G)

Panthers Eliminated in Buffalo...Moving Right Along to GAMEDAY vs Pittsburgh 3/27 1:00 PM

March 26, 2011
Sorry I am going to make this really short. Please go to George Richards' blog for a full recap.

BUFFALO - The Florida Panthers finally scored, but their efforts were futile. They fell to the Buffalo Sabres 4-2 Friday night. Drew Stafford had 2 goals and an assist, and Jason Pominville scored a goal while setting up a tip in goal by former Cat Jordan Leopold. After being down 1-0, the Panthers came back strong, tying the game at 1 on a Sergei Samsonov backhand goal. It was his 13th of the year. In the 3rd, the Panthers made it slightly less ugly, as Evegeny Dadonov had a wrist shot to make it 4-2. The goal was scored with just 3 seconds left in the game so, the Panthers had no shot at coming back.
CAT BYTES: The Panthers have been eliminated for an NHL Record setting 10th consecutive season.

THREE STARS:
  1. Drew Stafford (2 G 1 A)
  2. Jason Pominville (1 G 1 A)
  3. Tyler Ennis (2 A)

The Florida Panthers take on the Pittsburgh Penguins in game 4 of their 5 game road trip. Florida is out of playoff contention, while Pittsburgh has clinched a playoff spot and sits comfortably in the #4 spot. For those keeping track at home, the Panthers sit 1 point out of the 3rd worst record in the NHL, the highest you can be to claim the #1 draft spot. The two teams have met twice this year, with Pittsburgh taking both games. Most recently, Matt Cooke had the GWG in a 5-2 win on December 22 in Pittsburgh. The Panthers were featured on HBO's 24/7 that night. They also found themselves on the losing end in Sunrise, falling 3-2 November 22. Chris Conner had the goal in that game.

8:01 PM: Air Force tied it up! It's 1-1 after 2. Did not see the AFA goal, but if Yale loses, it would be a huge upset. In other scores, Michigan and Nebraska Omaha tied at 3 in OT and Minnesota Duluth takes care of Union 2-0

* * *
The Florida Panthers take on the Buffalo Sabres tonight in Buffalo. It is the 4th meeting between the two teams with the Panthers holding a 2-0-1 lead in the season series.  The Sabres were dominated in their first two games against Florida, losing 6-2 and 4-3 respectively. The scored of the second game is a bit misleading, as Florida and Buffalo traded 3 goal periods, with Florida scoring first and then Jason Garrison winning it late in the third. Last time they met, in Florida on February 10, Tyler Myers scored with 5 seconds left in overtime to give the Sabres their first win over Florida this year.

MOVING ON: Florida faces their third desperate team in 3 games. The first two have not gone their way, as they were shut out on consecutive nights against the New York Rangers and Chicago Blackhawks. Tonight, the face Ryan Miller and a Buffalo team that has seen themselves bouncing in and out of the 8th spot.  Right now, they're in, with a 6-3-1 record over their last 10. They sit 3 points ahead of Carolina and Toronto, having played 73 games. That's even with Carolina, but gives them two games in hand over The Leafs. In case you are wondering, Florida is two losses away from (finally) being eliminated from the playoffs.

WHO TO WATCH FOR: Stephen Weiss and Chris Higgins have 4 points on 2 goals and 2 assists this year against the Sabres for Florida. Higgins was traded at the deadline, and Weiss may not play tonight as he's missed the past two games.  Patrick Rissmiller has made the "long" journey from Rochester to fill in if necessary. Evgeny Dadonov will have to step up tonight. The rookie has 4 points, all on assists, this season against Buffalo. Meanwhile, Jordan Leopold is the only Sabre to have multiple goals against Florida this year, with 2 on the season series.
PROBABLE GOALIES:
FLA - Tomas Vokoun
BUF - Ryan Miller

March 24, 2011

Not much to be said here. Take a look at the video for yourself - expect those chills to rush up your spine. The nostalgia of Miami's 2005-06 season is rich in this video.

All I can say is: It's about that time again.

Windy Shutout: Panthers Shut Out for 2nd Straight Night, 4-0 in Chicago

March 24, 2011

CHICAGO - The Panthers hadn't scored a goal since 13:26 into Saturday's tilt with the New York Islanders. They were hoping for a reversal of luck and a chance to rebound after Tuesday's tough 1-0 loss in New York to the Rangers, but instead their scoreless drought continued as they fell 4-0 to the Chicago Blackhawks. The Panthers have not scored in 133:34. Tomas Vokoun was on his game, stopping the first 21 shots against him, but the next 10 proved to be too much, as he allowed four of them to get behind him.

Seabrook
The Panthers started to play sloppy around the 14:00 mark of the second period, and were called for a too many men on the ice penalty 9 seconds later. It was that powerplay that allowed Brent Seabrook, who was camped out in the right wing faceoff dot, to slap the puck in for his 5th goal of the season. He got the pass from the center point from Ducan Keith and Jonathan Towes also assisted on the powerplay goal at 14:41.

With a 1 goal lead, Chicago was not comfortable. They went into the intermission and third period with one goal. The came out and achieved that goal 46 seconds in. Patrick Kane started the rush with a defenseive end interception. He passed it to Towes down low, who found Viktor Stalberg on the other side of the crease. He wristed it past Vokoun's arm to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

They were not done yet. Keith has received the puck from Seabrook. He then passed it to Kane in the circle. He somehow got a wrister off before falling down. The puck appeared to take a funny hop and just somehow make its way into the net to make it 3-0. The Panthers were looking like this would not be their night. It was Kane's 25th at 12:04.

The icing on the cake for Chicago came at the tail end of the game. 17:05 in, the Slovak express took hold. Marian Hossa took the puck in, passed it to Michael Frolik, who EVERYONE in the building (including Vokoun) thought would shoot the puck (I mean, he DOES want a goal against his old team, right?). Instead of waiting and setting the puck up, he passed it to Tomas Kopecky who had a WIDE open net to score on, and he did just that. It was 4-0 and that was the final.

CAT BYTES: Corey Crawford was amazing in the game, stopping all 23 shots he faced. The Panthers continue their season-long 5 game road trip Friday in Buffalo when they take on the Sabres.

THREE STARS:
  1. Brent Seabrook (1 G 1 A)
  2. Jonathan Towes (0 G 2 A)
  3. Corey Crawford (W 23 SV)

FISH AND CHIPS: Fish and chips will be a regular feature in 2011. This is where the latest news and notes will be posted. Here is the first edition of "Fish and Chips"...

EXPERIMENT OVER: Matt Dominguez has been sent back to minor league camp. He posted a .190 BA in 16 appearances and 42 ABs in the 2011 spring season. Look for him to start the season most likely in AA Jacksonville or AAA New Orleans before getting a late May or early June call up to the majors. He has to figure out how to hit major league pitching to be successful, though. If he can figure that out, he WILL be a star in the MLB. The temporary fix has Omar Infante moving to 3B while Emilio Bonifacio holds the fort at 2B...FOR NOW! Of course, things can change completely if Chris Coghlan is not ready to start 2011 in CF.

OTHER DEMOTIONS: I missed a few from last week so this includes both last week and this week:
TO MINOR LEAGUE CAMP:
  • Dominguez
  • Elih Villenueva (RHP)
  • Clint Sammons (C)
  • Tim Torres (INF)
  • John Raynor (OF)
  • Ruban Gotay (INF)
  • Joe Thurston (INF)
  • Frank Mata (P)
  • Josh Kroeger (OF)

A few interesting names remain in camp with possibly 1 more cut expected before the roster is finally trimmed down to 25 men. These guys are all battling for a roster spot:
  • Greg Dobbs (INF)
  • Donnie Murphy (INF)
  • DeWayne Wise (OF)

PUBLIC WORKOUT: On Thursday, March 31, 2011 at 7:00pm, the Marlins will be holding a workout at Sun Life Stadium. The Workout is open to the public, and gates open at 6:00pm. This will lead to the kick off of the team's final season at Sun Life Stadium on April 1.
BALLPARK COUNTDOWN - ONLY 78 HOME GAMES REMAIN AT SUN LIFE STADIUM IN 2011.

DAY 2: Just 22 1/2 hours after starting their game in New York, the Panthers will drop the puck on another game, this time in Chicago against the Blackhawks. The Cats dropped a heart breaker 1-0 to the Rangers last night, and arrived into Chciago around 1:00 AM (central). Florida is looking to play spoiler, while Chicago looks to fight for their playoff lives. The "Wild Wild West" is still wide open, with only 6 points separating 4th and 10th place.

SEASON SERIES: Florida holds the lead in the season series
1-0. The Blackhawks are one of the few Western Conference teams the Panthers play twice. The Panthers hosted the Blackhawks on March 8, the second game of a season-high 7 game homestand. Florida took a 3-0 lead after 1 period, but Chicago came back to score 2 in the 2nd, but ended up losing 3-2. Now, with Florida in the midst of their season high 5 game road trip, and looking to bounce back.

PLAYING HURT: The Panthers were without goalie Scott Clemmenson yesterday. Tyler Plante was called up from the AHL. He did not make it in time for the morning skate. Wall Street trader Adam Reasoner (brother of the Panthers' Marty Reasoner) stepped in on his lunch break. Reasoner was a goalie at Boston College...he appeared in just 1 game in the 2005-06 season, his freshman year. Clemmenson will not play Wednesday

Also playing hurt is Stephen Weiss. He was out on Tuesday with a leg injury. He is expected to play on Wednesday. Jack Skille and Shawn Matthias made their returns Tuesday, with Patrick Rissmiller being sent to Rochester.

ONE MORE WELCOME HOME: Skille returns to Chicago for the first time since being traded in February. The injury kept him out for a few weeks, and he has appeared in just 8 games for the Panthers this year. Skille has 7 goals this year, all with the Blackhawks, but does have an assist with the Panthers. Michael Frolik continues to struggle in Chicago. He only has two goals in 18 games with the Hawks, while scoring 8 with Florida. He scored 21 goals in his first two seasons in Florida.

PROBABLE GOALIES:
FLA - Tomas Vokoun
CHI - Corey Crawford

Rags to Winners - Panthers Fall at MSG

March 23, 2011

NEW YORK CITY - There was not much of anything going on in New York last night. It was a trap game for both the Rangers and the Panthers. The Rangers were looking for an easy win, while the Panthers were looking forward to tomorrow night's tilt in Chicago with the Blackhawks. But both teams still had to play 60 minutes of hockey, and not much happened.

4:35 into the first period, the Panthers were called for the lone penalty of the game, between both teams. Keaton Ellerby took a 2 minute interference call.

The Rangers had a ton of chances in the first and second, but could not get the biscuit into the basket until Brandon Dubinsky scored his 22nd of the season. He tipped in a pass from Ryan Callahan that got past Tomas Vokoun, who had looked great until the 7:49 mark of the third when Dubinsky scored. Artem Anisimov also assisted on the goal.

The Panthers peppered goalie Henrik Lundqvist in the last few minutes of the third, but he was up to the task, stopping every shot he faced to earn his 10th shutout of the season.

As mentioned above, Florida travels west to Chicago to face the Blackhawks tomorrow, while the Rangers stay home and await the Ottawa Senators on Thursday.
